In (I think it was) Street Fighter Zero Three if you won a round using too many cheap or repetitive techniques, the victory icon that would appear underneath your life bar was a little block of cheese (as in "cheesy", the ultimate term of derision in beat-em-up gaming). Playing badminton today I found myself wishing there was a term defined in the rules for a similarly insalubrious victory. I don't seem to be a very good player anymore, so mostly these days when I play I find myself learning more about losing gracefully than necessarily playing well. For the record, I don't think you should congratulate yourself when you win a point or your opponents lose a point; I think smashing the shuttle directly at your opponent is an admission that you can't find a better way to win the point in question; and I think that behaving in general as though you care more that the game was won by yourself than that the game was played sportingly says unflattering things about your character. Well. Losing gracefully at the moment seems to involve being gracious in the face of defeats to people who revel in the above. It's quite challenging, which means I'm not very good with graciousness as of yet apparently and I evidently need a lot of practice.

Sorry, just venting.

A parallel term exists in FPS gaming, fortunately - camper. And I never understood what profound and utter scorn the term expresses until I started playing FPS games at work over lunchtime. But take it from someone who knows, the term expresses overwhelming derision.
