It's strange. Well, maybe it's not so strange.
I was going to say it's strange that I seem to grow more idealistic and activist as I age when the tendency is usually in the other direction. Well, I remember reading a quote in the university newspaper once, in first year, that ran approximately: If you're not a socialist in your youth, you have no heart; it you're not a conservative in your youth, you have no brain. It's occasionally erroneously attributed to Winston Churchill. Well, in any case I no longer agree; it really says nothing more than that an adult has to be irrational to be other than conservative.
But I don't think I've changed very much. I've never had any patience for hypocrisy, or sloppy thinking, or fatuousness. I'm just beginning to feel qualified in my opinions.
There was an interview with Arundhati Roy on television this evening. It was distressing. One wonders what one can or should do. But you have to pick your battles; and I've already picked two. |
